The origin University Library of Matej Bel in Banská Bystrica is related to the origin of Higher College of Education in Banská Bystrica in 1954. In 1964, after the origin of Faculty of Education, it became the central library of the faculty.

The library has the status of University Library of Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica since January 1, 1993. In the same year, the Library of Faculty of Economy of Services and Tourism in Banská Bystrica was annexed to the Central Library of Faculty of Education. Library of Faculty of Economy of Services and Tourism has been a branch of Central Economical Library in Bratislava since 1975.

The library system was decentralized in 1996. University Library of Matej Bel was abolished on April 1, 1996 by the decision of Academic Senate of the University of Matej Bel and four new libraries were established, they were directly controlled by the existing faculties.

Rector UMB decision on January 1, 2000, renewed the activity of the Matej Bel University Library as a library-information institution of the University.
